Malta
Arrival: December 1, 1868
Origins
The Civil Authorities of Malta asked the Mother General to send Sisters to take charge of a government orphanage. After only three years, the Sisters of Charity had been entrusted with the responsibility of various hospitals. In less than 20 years they were present in 16 governmental and ecclesial institutions – hospitals, orphanages, old people’s homes and prisons (women’s session).
Today
The main services in which the Sisters are engaged:
The current missions and activities of the Sisters of Charity are managed mainly by the laity.
A Primary and Secondary School. The Headmistress of the College is a Sister and the 2 Directors and 4 Assistants are lay people. All staff are lay. An elderly nun serves for a few hours in the Secondary School Secretariat. The motto of the College is “We learn to love and love to learn”.
The St. Joan Antida Foundation: it is the social arm of the Sisters of Charity. It responds to the needs of our times: victims and survivors of domestic violence, families who have some members with mental health problems, children from poor and illiterate families, families in difficulty, vulnerable women with children and refugees… In the Foundation there are professionally qualified staff who follow all cases that ask for help. A nun who is a social worker works as a volunteer in the Foundation.
Dar Hosea welcomes women who are victims of prostitution and offers the service of 3 social workers, the possibility to wash their belongings and to eat.
Who works in these 2 services puts the person at the center, trying to give her dignity and help her to discover her potential to improve her life condition.
There are 2 nursing sisters: one works in a state polyclinic and the other in a state rehabilitation hospital.
3 nuns are engaged in youth ministry.
A small community of 3 elderly sisters serve in a home for people with mental and physical disabilities.
All our communities are open and offer the availability of their spaces to various groups who ask to hold their meetings.
