100 Italian scientists signed an appeal today: ‘Let us speak clearly about the causes of climate change and its solutions, let us not call it bad weather. If we limit ourselves to describing what is before everyone’s eyes as an intensification of natural phenomena, we are condemned to impotence, at the very moment when it is still possible to reverse course.
Not talking about the causes of the increasingly frequent and intense extreme events affecting our planet,’ the appeal continues, ‘and not explaining the solutions for an effective response risks fuelling inaction, resignation or denial of reality, resulting in increased risks for our families and communities, especially the most disadvantaged.
As Sisters of Charity we join the call of the 100 scientists “to feel part of the solution and build greater confidence in the future”-
We therefore propose that you take a scientific approach to environmental issues and put into practice what this booklet proposes so that people and communities can act to build a more sustainable and socially just future.
OUR COMMON HOME – A guide to caring for our living planet
It came out in February 2023, the result of a joint collaboration between the Holy See and the Stockholm Environment Institute. It is a practical, illustrated booklet full of diagrams which, starting from the contents of Pope Francis’ Laudato si’, offers scientific information on climate change and its consequences, and suggests behaviours for a responsible use of resources.
