“In old age they will still bear fruit” (Ps 92:15) is the theme of Pope Francis’ second World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly.
It will be celebrated on the fourth Sunday of July, as we approach the liturgical memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, grandparents of Jesus.
This day invites us to emphasise the value and gift of grandparents and older people for society and for the Church’s communities.
It is also an invitation to reconsider and value grandparents and the elderly, who are too often kept on the margins of families and civil and ecclesial communities. Their experience of life and faith can help to build societies that are aware of their roots and capable of dreaming of a more united future.
The invitation to listen to the wisdom of the years is also particularly significant in the context of the synodal journey that the Church has undertaken.
